Malava police officer arrested over robbery attempt

The victim was returning home from a freshers’ night event at Shamberere National Polytechnic when the incident occurred.
Police in Malava Constituency, Kakamega County, have detained one of their own officers suspected of attacking and assaulting a 31-year-old man during an attempted robbery.
The victim was returning home from a freshers’ night event at Shamberere National Polytechnic when the incident occurred.
According to the Occurrence Book (ref. OB 02/31/05/2025), Kellybon Muchina was assaulted at Shamberere Market near Alufu Junction.
Reports indicate that Muchina was attacked by two individuals and suffered serious injuries. He was rescued by bystanders who took him to Vena Hospital, where he received treatment for deep cuts on his right hand.
Members of the public also apprehended the attackers, revealing that one of them is a police officer assigned to Imbiakhlao Police Station at Ingavira Police Post.
Police also arrested 24-year-old Byrum Ndegwe, a first-year student at Shamberere National Polytechnic, the same college where Muchina had attended the freshers’ night.
Officers recovered a police raincoat, two police berets without badges, and a tear gas canister from the suspects.
Malava Sub-County Police Commander Suleiman Majondo confirmed the case, explaining that authorities are awaiting the victim’s P3 form before formally charging the suspects.
"A police officer was indeed involved in an assault and is currently held at Kabras Police Station. Once we receive the P3 form from the victim, we will arraign the suspects, possibly as early as today," Majondo said.
